Former ILSP Visiting Fellow Hauwa Ibrahim was recently named “Person of the Year 2015” in Cavaglià, Italy, where she now makes her home. Mayor Giancarlo Borsoi praised Ibrahim’s work, saying, “We have the honor to know and reward an exceptional person. This is a woman who has done and is doing so much to protect human rights. It is an honor to be by her side this special night.”
Ibrahim is a Nigerian human rights lawyer who won the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize in 2005. She was especially cited for her pro bono work defending people condemned under the Shari’a laws in force in the northern Nigerian provinces, including her defense of Amina Lawal, Safiya Hussaini and Hafsatu Abubákar. Ibrahim been a Visiting Lecturer on Women’s Studies and Islamic Law at Harvard Divinity School, a fellow at both the Human Rights Program and the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School, a visiting professor at Saint Louis University School of Law and Stonehill College, as well as a World Fellow at Yale University.
